Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do solar panels add value to a house or business?

Buyers consider monthly electric bills when purchasing a business or home. So, buyers are open to the premium of solar-ready businesses or homes when assessing the long-term financial value.

How long do solar panels last?

The industry-standard life span is about 25 to 30 years, depending on the manufacturer.

How does solar energy solar panels work?

Step 1: Sunlight activates the panels
Step 2: The cells produce an electrical current
Step 3: The electrical energy is converted from DC electric to AC electric through the solar inverter.
Step 4: The converted electricity powers your home.
Step 5: A net meter measures your power usage from your panels compared to your power use from the utility.

How Solar Panels Work

Is maintenance required?

Solar panels generally require very little maintenance to function. The only thing they need is a periodic light cleaning to make sure dirt, leaves, and other debris aren’t obstructing the sun’s rays. The only time you may need more extensive maintenance is if your panels’ energy output starts to decrease. Timberlyn can work with you to ensure your investment is well taken care of.

Agricultural Costs

Solar energy can cut a farm’s electricity and heating bills. Solar heat collectors can be used to dry crops and warm homes, livestock buildings, and greenhouses.

Can you mount solar panels on a manufacturing building?

Factory and Commercial buildings are often the most ideal location. They are traditionally flat and offer ample unused space for the solar array installation.

What tax incentives are available in Illinois?

DSIRE is a great tool to use when evaluating current incentives in Illinois. In addition to the FTC, Utility Smart Inverter Rebate, net metering, and business accelerated depreciation, customers can also take advantage of Illinois Shines program. Download the Illinois Shines Brochure.

How much can solar reduce my electric bill?

Going Solar can eliminate your electric bill entirely or reduce it so dramatically that electricity costs are no longer a factor in your budget.
On average, customers save 75 to 95% of their average electric bill per month with solar

What's the federal tax credit I keep hearing about?

The FTC is a national credit home and business owners can utilize on their yearly income tax filing. This is 26% of the total system cost you can deduct. You can use it in the first year or even spread it out over 6 years.

I have a 3,000 SQ FT house. How many solar panels do I need?

Your system size is based on many factors:

    • Average annual electric usage (yearly kWh’s) of the site
    • The efficiency of your solar panels
    • The peak sun hours in your location
    • The orientation of your solar array
    • The available space to available to install your solar array.

Timberlyn and our engineering company (Simpleray) will take all of these elements into consideration when designing your solar array. Our team will develop the most cost-effective solution possible. I will attach a Simple Solar Calculator to the email that I hope we can use somewhere. It will be labeled Simple Solar Calculator.

What is net metering and how does it apply to me?

  1. Net metering is a solar incentive that allows you to store energy in the electric grid.
  2. When your solar panels produce more electricity than you need, that energy is sent to the grid in exchange for credits on your electric bill.
  3. This gives you the ability to offset your bill by using the credits in the months that your solar array may not be producing all of the electricity you need.
  4. Most customers take advantage of these credits in the winter months.
